The Partnership of the Aspen Medical Practice
We said a fond farewell to our partner Dr Nick Gilbert who retired in November 2018. Dr Gilbert had been a partner at Heathville Medical Practice for 29 years and was instrumental in the development of the Aspen Centre and the merger of the four practices. We wish him all the best for his retirement – in his words “the fun starts here”.

I qualified in London, at St Bartholomew’s Hospital in 1987 and, after further training in Norfolk, settled in Gloucestershire to become a partner in Gloucester in 1993. Over the years I have been involved in a number of other roles such as being the lead county forensic medical examiner and chair of the local medical committee and am now clinical chair of NHS Gloucestershire CCG where I spend most of my current working week. I am still in the practice on one day a week and, especially since the practice merger, enjoy being caught up by the collective enthusiasm of a whole bunch of new GPs!

I graduated from Imperial College (Charing Cross & Westminster Medical School) in 1998, and went on to do GP training in Surrey; qualifying as a GP in 2002/3. I moved to Gloucester in 2003 to join the former Heathville Medical Practice as a full-time partner, before reducing to part-time working after having my son in 2010. Having merged into the Aspen Medical Practice last year, I continue to work three days a week with particular interests in women’s health (including coil fitting and general family planning), GU medicine and Paediatrics. I am also involved in Medical Education as a trainer for GP registrars placed at the practice. I have been married to Hasib (one of the other partners) since 2006 and we have an 8 year old son who keeps us busy outside of work. I enjoy gardening and Crochet and attending Iron Zuu Gloucester to keep fit.
- Dr Hasib Khalid – Male
Dr H Khalid has an interest in Musculoskeletal Medicine and Migraines
I qualified in 2002 from Imperial College and initially pursued a surgical career. In 2009 I switched from Trauma and Orthopaedics to General Practice, completing GP training in 2012. I maintain an interest in bones and joints (and the patient attached to them!) in addition to being a generalist. Some facts: I have lived in Gloucester since 2007 having followed Dr (Mrs) Khalid here. I am a born and bred Brummie but have lost the accent somewhere. I have a motor racing licence and aim to race at the Nurburgring in the next year or two. I have a disproportionate love for Abba and the movies Miss Congeniality and Star Wars.
- Dr Iain Jarvis – Male
Dr Jarvis has an interest in Drug and Alcohol Addiction, Learning Disabilities, Teenage Health, Osteoporosis and works in the Homeless Health centre one day a week
I graduated from Medical School in Cardiff in 1988, and got married in 1989 to Fiona. We have two grown-up children who have not followed me into medicine! I am an elder in my local church, and very involved there with our youth work. I started to work as a GP in this practice in 1994. My medical interests are broad, but especially include mental health, substance misuse (I have worked with the homeless since 1998) and learning disability (and I’m now the GP to the National Star College, Ullenwood). I have a personal interest in osteoporosis also. I am on the practice’s management executive.

I graduated in Medicine & Surgery in 1984 from Dundee University
after completing a B M Sc Honours in Pharmacology. I then completed my training as a General Practitioner and have been practising since 1990. I was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of General Practitioners in 1997. My clinical interests include being an Educational Supervisor, teaching GP Trainees and performing minor surgery.
- Dr Bob Hodges – Male

After six years in Medical School in Cardiff I decided to train as a pathologist, but after three years I realised that that wasn’t the career for me so I came to Gloucestershire to train as a GP in 2005. I joined Barnwood in 2008 and I’m now one of the executive partners at Aspen Medical Practice. I work full-time and I have clinical interests in Diabetes and lifestyle, Men’s Health, Cancer, Dermatology, skin surgery and ENT medicine. I particularly enjoy looking after people with complex conditions and older people. I work in A&E one evening a week and I’m also vice-chairman of the Gloucestershire Local Medical Committee, which represents the GPs of Gloucestershire. What little spare time I have left is mostly spent with my wife and teenage daughters. I enjoy swimming, live music and I’m somewhat obsessed with rocket science and all things space. I even helped my best friend to set up a rum company, which over the past two years has been an awful lot of fun…

I studied at Bristol University. I enjoy most aspects of General Practice especially Women’s Health and Respiratory Medicine. My two children keep me entertained and I enjoy making music with my guitar teaching husband.
- Dr Jhumpa Sarkar – Female
Dr Sarkar has an interest in Women’s Health
I spent my childhood in Gloucester and went to Coney Hill Junior School followed by Colwell School for Girls. I studied medicine at Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School, University of London and qualified in 1993. I initially trained in obstetrics and gynaecology (MRCOG 1999) and then decided to become a GP. After training I got my first job at Saintbridge in 2003 and have remained ever since! I enjoy going on walks with my husband, cooking and reading Agatha Christie’s vast collection of stories.

Dr Kuok has in interest in Lifestyle Medicine, Diabetes and Palliative Care
I’m originally from Malaysia and graduated from Leicester University in 1998 (where I kissed my frog and found my “prince”). I did my GP training in Derbyshire then moved to Gloucestershire where I took on partnership at Saintbridge in 2003. My areas of interest include Lifestyle Medicine, Diabetes and Palliative Care. I am passionate about patients taking control of their own health. We have a great team delivering the Eat Real Food programme which focuses on Metabolic Syndrome. I love being with my family and friends. I enjoy good food and I need my yoga practice every Sunday to slow me down..

Dr Marksteiner has an interest in Anticoagulation
I am originally from the Black Forest in Southern Germany and trained as GP in the UK where I have lived with my family since 1995. I have also worked as a Clinical Assistant at a hospice in Kent. I enjoy being a part-time partner at Aspen now and has a special interest in anticoagulation. I also very much enjoy being a trainer for Foundation year 2 doctors.
- Dr Wali Islam – Male
Dr Islam has an interest in Dermatology and Minor Surgery
I graduated from Dhaka University in 2003. I completed my GP training in Glasgow and South Wales. I was a GP partner in South Wales before moving to Gloucestershire in 2013. My areas of special interest include dermatology, minor surgery and joint injections. I also work for the GP out of hours service. I live in Cheltenham with my wife and three children.
- Dr Kannan Raj – Male
Dr Raj has an interest in Child Health, Elderly Care and Frailty
After my medical graduation from Madras, I spent around 10 years as a Family physician at the lovely tropical islands of Maldives, where I gained lots of experience with General Practice and Community Paediatrics. Following the fateful tsunami in 2004, I moved to the UK, trained further, and obtained Membership of RCGP. I have been a GP in Gloucester since 2010. My interests include Pediatrics, Dermoscopy, Care of Frail elderly and Community Geriatrics. I enjoy reading and listening to instrumental music to relax and rejuvenate.

Dr Wilson has an interest in Diabetes, Lifestyle Medicine, Palliative Care, Women’s Health, COPD and Asthma
I trained in St Andrews and Manchester University. I am passionate about palliative care, Women’s Health and promoting health and wellbeing through non pharmaceutical means. I help to deliver the Eat Real Food programme and am an advocate for patients who wish to take control of their chronic diseases such as diabetes, pre diabetes gout and PCOS. I live with my husband and daughter and our Westie Woody. I enjoy going on holiday with my family and friends and love any excuse to dress up in silly costumes and have fun.
- Dr Nicola Pockett – Female
Dr Pockett has an interest in Palliative Care and Mental Health
I qualified from the University of Bristol in 2007 and spent five years working in psychiatry before switching to General Practice. I finished my GP training in Gloucestershire in 2018 and have been working at the surgery since then, before becoming a partner in 2019. My specialist interests at work include mental health and palliative care. I live locally with my husband and our two children and my interests outside work include theatre, cooking and reading, as well as being an avid Manchester United fan..
